Kombucha

Are you like me, who had never heard the word Kombucha much less what it is? I’m here to share my findings with you. Kombucha is a fermented mixture of yeast and bacteria. It is not a mushroom as some think. It is made by fermenting black tea, yeast bacteria, sugar and other ingredients. People commonly use kombucha orally as a medicine for different conditions, but there is no scientific evidence to prove the effectiveness.

The benefits seen from this fermented, lightly fizzy sweetened tea are:

- aids in digestion

- promotes weight loss

- facilitates detoxification

- boosts heart health

- controls diabetes

- protects liver

- aids in reducing arthritis and relief from gastric ulcers

- prevents cancer

- enhances mood

- boosts immunity

- treats asthma

- improves cellular health

Kombucha comes in various flavors and has a taste somewhat like champagne or apple cider. According to USDA National Nutrient Database it contains lots of ingredients that after fermentation become a nutritional powerhouse!

As a local New Orleanian, I love supporting locally founded businesses. We have a great distributor right here in my home city. Big Easy Bucha was founded in 2004 in New Orleans. It started in a garage and thus has moved up twice to bigger facilities due to it’s large growth. Part of Big Easy Bucha’s sales benefit Southern Charities including LA SPCA and Grow Dat Youth Farm. I just love companies that give back! With their community minded business approach, they buy their premium fruits and vegetables close to home from Gulf South Farmers. Kombucha tea can be found in many brands, but my personal favorite is Big Easy Bucha and can be found at Publix, Rouses Market, Central Market, PJ’s Coffee Of New Orleans, Whole Foods Louisiana and Stumptown Coffee Roasters. If you are ever in New Orleans and want to stop at their facility, they have several flavors on tap so you can give it a taste. As I say, don’t knock it til you try it.
